In 2019, Copenhagen Jazz Orchestra had the honor of collaborating with the legendary Brazilian composer and multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti in a project titled “Brazilian Aria.” This unique concert series presented a rich musical dialogue between Gismonti’s deeply expressive compositions and new works written by Lars Møller, specially crafted for this collaboration.
The project featured new compositions by Lars Møller alongside fresh orchestral reinterpretations of Gismonti’s iconic pieces, bringing a new dimension to the Brazilian master’s music. These arrangements allowed the expressive qualities of the big band to merge seamlessly with the intricate rhythms and textures of Gismonti’s world, creating a breathtaking fusion of Brazilian musical traditions and contemporary jazz orchestration.
Performed in esteemed venues, including the Black Diamond in Copenhagen, these concerts were a milestone in Copenhagen Jazz Orchestra’s journey of artistic exploration. “Brazilian Aria” was not just a celebration of Gismonti’s work—it was a bold new take on his legacy, where tradition and innovation met in a deeply immersive and unforgettable musical experience.
This project stands as a testament to Copenhagen Jazz Orchestra’s dedication to pushing musical boundaries and collaborating with world-renowned artists to create unique and lasting contributions to jazz history.
